Alchemy - Nigredo

The Garth, Norwich University College of the Arts, March 2010

Paint Me Black takes one of four stages of alchemy, the blackening phase and applies this to the human body. The piece looks at individuation and existential embodiment and explores the relationship between the audience and performer in which the roles are challenged/reversed. The unconscious response and relationship between spectator and artist is then engaged and explored.

Definitions of the Alchemy Process

  • nigredo (-putrefactio), blackening (-putrefaction): corruption, dissolution, individuation
  • albedo, whitening: purification, burnout of impurity; the moon, female
  • citrinitas, yellowing: spiritualisation, enlightenment; the sun, male
  • rubedo, reddening: unification of man with god, unification of the limited with the unlimited
